IN SEPTEMBER 1978 the much-loved Jani Strasser died, severing another link with the early years of the Festival, heralding a decade of change – Moran Caplat retired in 1981 and was succeeded as general administrator by Brian Dickie who had 12 years as head of GTO under his belt. John Cox also left to run Scottish Opera and was not replaced as director of productions until 1993 by Graham Vick, but in the meantime Peter Hall had the grander title of artistic director. Stalwarts on the music staff such as Martin Isepp remained. New conductors were given their chance in Sussex and with GTO, among them Stephen Barlow, Bryan Balkwill, Nicholas Braithwaite and Kenneth Montgomery. Cox produced a new Rosenkavalier in 1980 with designs by the 87-year-old Erté, who courted controversy by moving the opera 100 years forward. Rachel Yakar and Elizabeth Harwood shared the Marschallin, Felicity Lott was Octavian and Haitink conducted. Haitink also conducted Hall’s magical and classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1981, Glyndebourne’s first Britten opera for 33 years and one of its greatest triumphs thanks also to John Bury’s set. Hall’s new production of Gluck’s Orfeo was the perfect framework for Janet Baker’s retirement from the stage.
